The kindergarten clay projects are on display in the 1st grade hallway. Weebly wouldn't let me rotate the pictures, so sorry that some of them are not the correct direction. The kids learned how to create a pinch pot using a pinch and twist method. They learned the definition of texture. Afterwards, they created their clay hands using tools to create texture since we use our hands to feel texture.
5th Grade reflected on the question, "Why Do People Make Art?" after being given little sheets of paper with a series of different statements on them. They were asked to tell me what question related to the statements they got, and the question was, "Why Do People Make Art?". We then discussed the meaning of each of the statements they got and how they related to art. I defined typography and the art of lettering. They were then asked to recreate their statement or one they wrote using some sort of lettering technique to turn their words into artwork.
In elementary art, we work with themes and big ideas as a guide for each unit. For example, some themes may be “dinosaurs”, “self-portraits”, or “hybrid animals”. A big idea may be “healing”, “place”, or “time”. Almost all the lessons are interdisciplinary because art is inherently interdisciplinary. Art processes and techniques are taught during each unit, but the actual idea and design is developed solely by the student. This allows each student the freedom for self-expression and the opportunity to develop their creative thinking skills. I encourage students to break away from mainstream designs and symbols, and come up with something all their own.
I teach about the elements of design, which are line, color, shape, form, value, texture, and space. I start to teach about the principles of design as the students advance. The principles of design are balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, unity, and variety. Each grade level learns about contemporary and historical art throughout the trimester that I have them. Students observe and discuss various aspects of the images; what they see; how these images make them feel; what these images make them think; and what they like and dislike. The artists we use varies and sometimes in one unit they will view ten different pieces by ten different artists. The goal is to expose them to as many different ways to create art as possible. I believe art is a universal language and that the more visual language they can begin to interpret and understand, the more visually literate they will become. My curriculum also encompasses the Studio Habits of Mind developed by Project Zero at the Harvard School of Education. These are described in the attached file below the title of this post. The following are the Colorado Art Education Standards that we use as a guide to make sure our lessons align with the state visual art goals.

YAY! We had a great turn out last night for the art show reception. Thank you to everyone that volunteered and attended. It was so rewarding to see the kids excited about their artwork hanging on the walls. I am going to post pictures from the reception in the coming weeks. Thank you to Elizabeth Honadel and Richard Lewis for helping document the night with their photography skills. Thank you Claire McDonald and the CRC for helping us coordinate everything.
Come check out the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade interactive mural that I hung last night for the reception. It will be up until the last week of school if you want to take a picture in front of it. It's to the left of the lobby on your way to the gym and commons. Come snap a pic! Hello All!
The Stargate Art Show Reception will be Thursday, May 3rd from 6:00-8:00 pm. There will be over 800 pieces of artwork at the show of either 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional works. We will have a self-serve selfie station, so bring your cameras or phones to take pictures. There will also be a food truck, so that you may purchase pizza or other goodies. The artwork will be taken down May 10th and 11th, and will be returned to students before or after the weekend. We will be continuing to select work for the Stargate Permanent Art Collection. One piece will be selected from each grade level to be framed with a plaque. The selected pieces will permanently displayed in the school. Also, if you would like to sign-up to help with the reception night, set-up, or take down, the sign-up genius is below. http://bit.ly/ArtHelp We hope to see you there! -Mrs. Beatty Last night we had our art reception at Orchard Dental. There was pizza, drinks, and an adorable tooth cake that Cindy Tuchklaper made(pictured below). They had goody bags for the kids and some of the kids posed with their work. The work will be up for a month or two if you did not make it. A big thank you to the Tuchklaper's and the team at Orchard Dental for throwing the reception! Hi Parents and Students!
We are doing things a little differently this year. I wanted to have every Stargate student involved in the art show this year, so I have been collecting 2-D artwork through-out the school year for the art show. I will collect 2-d work from my third trimester students right before the art show. Right after spring break, we will be collecting 3-D artwork from any and all students. They can submit one 3-D piece. Please place a piece of tape on their 3-D work with their first and last name and homeroom on it. Place it on a spot that will not be visible when displayed. We have limited space to display 3-D work, so if we get a ton of entries, we may have to cap it at a certain point. Every student will have one or two pieces of 2-D work in the show though. DETAILS: What? 3-D ARTWORK with FIRST and LAST name on it and HOMEROOM How Much? ONE PIECE When? Can submit it from April 2nd-April 20th How and Where? Submit pieces by bringing them to the elementary art room (ROOM 148) between the hours of 8:00 AM and 3:30 PM. When you bring the work by, you must fill out a label for your artwork. The Stargate art show will be the first two weeks of May. The reception will be on the night of May 3rd. More details to come! Many of you know that I have had a student teacher for the last eight weeks. Jessica Mindenhall assisted and taught her teach work sample to 3rd grade while she was here. The 3rd graders really bonded with her and it was hard to say goodbye to her. She will be finishing her teaching program this spring at Metropolitan State University and is currently looking for a art teacher position for the fall. The following is the project she did with the kids for her teacher work sample.
