After studying modern day robots and artists that create robot art, the students were asked to design mixed media robots out of aluminum foil tape, sharpies, and recycled plastic and metal. They first sketched out their design and then wrote about their robot's name and function. We spent time talking about how to create a sketch and why we sketch out our ideas. We also talked about how detail can make your work more interesting and unique. As the students continued their work, we reviewed what personal style is and how it is important that everyone's work looks different. The students watched the following video:
The theme for this project was "sugar". The students learned about the history of sugar as well as interesting facts about sugar to use for inspiration to create a painting of a sugary treat. They viewed and analyzed the artwork of Wayne Thiebaud, who is famous for painting desserts. They then sketched a design of a dessert of their choosing. They created a final piece using celluclay, tempera paint, and sharpie. Celluclay is paper pulp clay. It was used to add texture and a 3-dimensional element to their paintings.
