We just finished up our last project and we are ending the trimester by glazing our soul shakers. For the last project, the students learned about how fauvists used unrealistic colors to convey emotion or to make certain things stand out. The students observed the unrealistic colors in the paintings of Henri Matisse. We also studied how to emphasize something in our artwork by looking at various examples of how artists emphasize particular elements using size, position, contrast, and color. I then demonstrated how to do various types of shading and overlapping with colored pencil. I introduced them to my favorite type of pen for drawing, which is a waterproof uni-ball vision. They were given a choice between working with colored pencils or oil pastel, and were shown how to outline their work with pen before adding color. After learning some art history, art principles, and techniques, it was time to make art! I asked for volunteers to model for the assignment. All the volunteer's names were put into a hat, and I drew out three names. The models dressed up in various props and the other students drew them. We talked about style and how your work doesn't have to be realistic to be successful. Some students took a very abstract approach, while other tried to make their drawings more realistic. There is an element of humor in some of the pieces as some students chose really humorous props and facial expressions. Pictures of the models and some of the drawings will be posted soon..... |
