The third and fourth graders recently completed making their clay soul shakers. A soul shaker is a clay rattle that has personal meaning to the artist. The students learned about rattles around the world and through-out time. They were able to identify the use of rattles for ceremonies, music, entertainment, and to occupy a baby or child. Students designed a variety of clay rattles after learning the steps to construct a usable clay rattle. Some students created human or animal-themed soul shakers while other decorated their rattles with various lines and patterns. We will be glazing our soul shakers towards the end of next week. Stay posted for pictures.
The third and fourth graders have spent the last few weeks drawing instruments from observation and then using those skills to create abstract or realistic representations of instruments using watercolor pencil and sharpie. Students also had the option of adding additional materials to their projects such a sequins, glitter glaze, and ribbons.
The students studied musical instruments in art throughout time. We discussed the importance of music and how it makes us feel. We also discussed how artists use subject matter from everyday life and music is a part of everyday life for many people. Students had the option of inventing a new musical instrument for this project too. They learned how to use watercolor pencils through a demonstration and through experimentation before they worked with them on their final pieces. Students created their pieces on very large pieces of watercolor paper and many of them are the size of the instrument in real life. They are displayed outside of the art classroom, but below are a few pictures of them. In third and fourth grade, students will be challenged to advance their ideas and fully utilize their critical and creative thinking skills. At this point, the students have a more defined understanding of what creativity is and why it’s important to think in new ways. Students will begin to understand some of the more complex principles of art such as unity, movement, and balance. Students will be introduced to metal embossing, scratch art, and watercolor pencils. They will learn more clay hand-building techniques that require a lot of problem-solving.
