The third and fourth graders spent a few days drawing instruments from observation and then using those skills to create abstract or realistic representations of instruments using watercolor pencil and sharpie. Students also had the option of adding additional materials to their projects such a sequins, glitter glaze, and ribbons.
The students studied musical instruments in art throughout time. We discussed the importance of music and how it makes us feel. We also discussed how artists use subject matter from everyday life and music is a part of everyday life for many people. Students had the option of inventing a new musical instrument for this project too.
They learned how to use watercolor pencils through a demonstration and through experimentation before they worked with them on their final pieces. Students created their pieces on very large pieces of watercolor paper and many of them are the size of the instrument in real life.
3rd grade has finished their work, when 4th grade finishes I will post more pictures.
